Strokes News

In an August interview with Fab Moretti, he reveals some details about the Strokes getting back in the studio in FEBRUARY. Here is the excerpt:

What about the Strokes?
The plan is for us to start getting our ideas together in February. I can’t wait to see those guys and work on music with them, but right now all of my focus is on this. With me and [guitarist] Nick [Valensi] living in L.A., and everyone else in New York City, I feel a bit detached from the rest of the guys, but we keep in touch. It's weird, for ten years — since 1998 — we were together all the time.

There was a rumor a while back that the Strokes might work with producer Rick Rubin on the next record.
I'd love to work with Rick Rubin. He made some pretty seminal records. But it's like, before we have an idea, before there's a sketch done, we’re not going to choose the color.

Yesterday was a beautiful fall day, except I think it was like 80 degrees.

I met Suse for brunch at Lauriol Plaza and then we spent the rest of the day walking around the neighborhood.

We stopped at the Ashley on 18th street.

Then we met up with the girls at Bourbon.

Then we went to Veritas to see Fred. This is where my night ended. I also did not take a lot of photos. Missing here are Sarah and the adorable girls who were wearing only clothes from a clothing swap.

I'm looking forward to more fall days.

yesterday, we went to homestead farms to pick pumpkins.

We were joined by Melody and Drew.

We took a hay ride down to the pumpkin patch.

Remember the Vines?

I was really into the Vines first album. When it was released they compared the lead singer, Craig Nicholls, to Kurt Cobain. That was kind of a stretch, but then the Rolling Stones expose about the Vines came out and we all found all that Craig was kind of a freak. LC and I were really got into the fact that Craig was basically a stoner with special needs.

So, anyway, the Vines have a new album coming out and here is the first single and video from the album, Melodia.

But I still prefer the first single. I LOVE all of that screaming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SATURDAY

On Saturday, somehow I woke up too early and met up with the mammal, wes, angie and friends at Asylum. It was hot as balls outside. The mammal needed a cheerfest so I told her that she was in my hands for the rest of the day and that all her problems would be solved in two beers. We were going on a bar crawl down 18th street until we got to the bus stop. Bets and Jeremy had invited us over later that day for an AC party. The plan was to drink our way down to the bus stop, hop on the bus and sit in the AC.

Somehow, when making this plan, I forgot that most the bars are closed during the day. The only place open was La Fourchette, so we stopped in for a bottle of champagne. One of our favorite things to do in DC during the summer is sit outside and drink champagne - I mean duh, who doesn't love to do this?

We were only able to sit outside for twenty minutes (and that was pushing it) before we almost melted into our chairs. So we took the champagne party indoors. This is when the idea for whiskey watermelon was born. But, before we continued on to the AC party, the mammal had another great idea ---- to get matching tattoos. And thus our day REALLY began:

The mammal carried a watermelon.

We finally made it to the AC party. There was a lot of sitting, smoking, eating whiskey watermelon and um....

The mammal and I ended the day by sleeping in the guest room on NJ Ave.

Sweat - It's still the new makeup.

Two weekends ago, it was the hottest it had been year-to-date. There is little to do in DC when it's hot other than sweat and drink beer. We are pretty good at those two things and sometimes they make us a little crazy.

FRIDAY
That Friday night, we went to Angie's for Wes' Birthday Party. In DC, there are two things guaranteed at every party - sweating and exboyfriends. And it's really fun to sweat in front of your exboyfriend.

Here is our friend, the mammal. She looks cute when she sweats. I think it helps when you wear a little dress. It minimizes the sweat.

Even the girls from the Honeysuckle Hideout were sweaty. But at this point, their AC had not been installed yet.

And the birthday boy was really sweaty. He had also just woken up from being passed out. I think when this photo was taken it was only 11pm.

And Casey. He really knows how to keep it real in the 100 degree weather.

The Liz's were definitely ready to go. We had enough of the exparade and we split right after this photo was taken and went to the Raven.

The Raven provided us with a very interesting evening with some young men from Scandinavia. LC thinks that this night was worse than our evening in Bailey's X-Roads. If you haven't heard that story before, you can ask us sometime when we are drunk. It's a good one.

After our diversion for the evening, we met back up with the party peeps at Mark's house just in time for the sunrise. I fell asleep on the back steps. And then it was time to go home.

Last night, Mammal, Crowie and I went to DC9 to see the Gray Kid. The three of us have recently reunited and are hitting the pavement like it's 2004!

Liz and I sat in a booth drinking screwdrivers while the mammal and her brother rocked with some tambourines toward the front of the stage. Good topics for discussion at the Gray Kid show include:

- Gia from Full House

We finally made our way up to the Mammal in time to hear Lonely Love and then we went out for a cigarette.

Outside there were a bunch of skinny boys with long hair and an old tan dude sporting some country western garb.

I was ready to go, but Liz said we should check out the Parlor Mob, so we went back upstairs with our fresh Screwdrivers (which by the way, is the best drink of summer.)

We posted up at the bar as the Parlor Mob took the stage. As soon as they started playing, we stopped dead in our tracks. When we recovered, we rushed to the front of the stage. It was the skinny guys from outside and they were not another boring indie rock band!!!!

This band somehow took a time machine from 1973 to 2008. It was like 24 year olds playing this modernized version of Led Zepplin and not in a cheesey cover song type of way. More in a facemelting, flip you shit type of way!

Crowie and I kept grabbing each other and freaking out. She was screaming and at one point looked at me and said, "Music is my drug."

We haven't felt this way about a band since the Strokes.

There were some young women standing in front of us and we asked them where the band was from and they said New Jersey and that they went to high school with some of the guys. We told them how we loved the Stone Pony and they told us that Parlor Mob is playing the Stone Pony next Saturday night. We told them we'd see them there.

After the show, we gushed to each member of the Parlor Mob about how our faces melted and we were refreshed and amazed by their band. They were incredibly nice and thankful and really excited that we are coming to see them at the Stone Pony. (We just happened to see the Strokes at the pony in 2001 and have been looking for an excuse to go back for awhile now.) So, we gushed about Asbury Park, which is their hometown and ridiculousness just ensued. We got all their merch!

(the mammal somehow missed all of this because she got in a time machine and traveled back to 1993 and was reliving freshman year of high school.)

So next weekend, Crowie and I are meeting up in Asbury Park. She will be in NYC picking up her SY ticket and hanging with the pizza bagel. Hopefully, Grez will ride his bike down to hang with us.

At fight night, Marcello told me that they are making a Terminator 4 starring Christian Bale as John Connor! I don't know if you are aware or not, but I am OBSESSED with the Terminator movies. They like totally blow my mind. Many people were not fans of T3: Rise of the Machines starring Nick Stahl and Claire Danes, but whoa!!! Everything came together in that movie and it was JUDGEMENT DAY!!!!!!

So, T4 picks up in 2018, post Judgement Day. Christian Bale IS John Connor. Warner Bros released this synopsis:

Set in post-apocalyptic 2018, John Connor (Bale) is the man fated to lead the human resistance against Skynet and its army of Terminators. But the future Connor was raised to believe in is altered in part by the appearance of Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington), a stranger whose last memory is of being on death row. Connor must decide whether Marcus has been sent from the future, or rescued from the past. As Skynet prepares its final onslaught, Connor and Marcus both embark on an odyssey that takes them into the heart of Skynet’s operations, where they uncover the terrible secret behind the possible annihilation of mankind.

Kyle Reese also reappears in T4. I don't think Arnold has signed on, but there is a rumor that Josh Brolin will play a terminator. Charlotte Gainsbourg plays Kate Connor (nee Brewster.)

I am excited. They just started shooting.

Over Memorial Day weekend, I designed a point system for outdoor extreme points. The goal by the end of the summer is to reach 20 points.

On Saturday, Sarah and I walked through Rock Creek Park to the waterfront in Georgetown. There, we rented a canoe and rowed around Roosevelt Island. For these activities, we each earned 2 points. Sarah earned an extra ½ point for breaking a nail while rowing.

June 25, just a day after she reissues her legendary debut LP Exile in Guyville in an expanded edition on new label ATO Records, the incomparable Liz Phair will take the stage at New York City's Hiro Ballroom to run through the album's 18 nearly flawless tracks, acoustically. Dates for similar events in Chicago and San Francisco can be expected shortly.

Probably goes without saying: holy shit.

I like the Kooks.

When I went to Portland last May with Ivy, we were having brunch at the Doug Fir and I had a moment. I went outside to have my moment. Ivy came outside to cheer me up and we saw the Kooks (who had a show there the night before) packing up their tour van. Then we saw a shirtless Kook run across the parking lot, toward the van. And my moment was over.

The kooks released their new album last month. I love the first track, See the Sun.

In 2008, a company, let's say a shoe company, hires a big advertising firm. Executives at the ad firm call their teenage nieces in New York and London, and ask them what's cool. And then the shoe company throws money at people.

That is how we imagine Santogold, the Strokes' Julian Casablancas and Pharrell Williams from the Neptunes came to be working together on a song for Converse trainers. And Santogold - the scattershot American electro-punk who is currently one of the most talked-about artists - is fine with it. "It's like one of the main ways to get our music heard now and so it's stupid for artists to shy away from that," she said to Gigwise.

The new untitled song is “such a Pharrell track”, Santogold said. We hope this means it recalls the heights of Justin Timberlake and not the lows of Skateboard P.

A video has also been shot, in which we assume Converse trainers will feature prominently.

Finally, if anyone’s worrying that this kind of arbitrary commissioned project might somehow be lacking in a clear, creative vision, Santogold offers the following lucid insight: “Everybody on it does their own separate thing and we didn’t do it together so it ends up being just this weird long song with sort of everybody with lots of their own personalities separate.”

It’s enough to make us long for Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney on a horse-drawn wagon.

AND From Pitchfork:

Pitchfork heard the track today, and we have to say that her description is quite spot-on. Over a bouncy rhythm indebted to old school soul, the three take turns singing verses that seem to have little to do with one another, and absolutely nothing to do with Converse or shoes in general.

It sounds like a less shiny, more downtown version of the Timbaland/Justin Timberlake/Nelly Furtado jam "Give It to Me", complete with silly disses of unidentified targets ("I find your approach so adolescent / I may look young, but your game is pre-pubescent," Santogold sings.) Pharrell makes the unfortunate decision to try to sing (that has never worked out well in the past), crooning come-ons like "now thank you for coming to my drive-thru." As usual, Julian sounds like he just woke up, making the line "if you wanna be like us you better work every night" kind of comical. There's also a part near the end where everybody sings about how they "just wanna dance." (BLOGGER NOTE: AWESOME)

All in all, it should sound just fine in a TV commercial.

In other news, both Santogold and Pharrell (as part of N.E.R.D.) have plenty of dates on the docket. Julian doesn't seem to be doing much.

Okay, obviously, this is exciting for me. I need to find this video and song soon. Glad to see Julian hasn't fallen into a hole and that he is doing something.

UK-based sales company Velvet Octopus will be launching sales in Cannes for S. Darko, billed as the sequel to the 2001 cult hit Donnie Darko. Fox has already taken North American rights.

Daviegh Chase reprises her role as Donnie's younger sister. The cast for S. Darko also includes Ed Westwick (Son Of Rambow, Gossip Girl), Briana Evigan (Step Up 2) and Justin Chatwin (Dragon Ball).

Ash Shah's Silver Nitrate and Newmarket Capital are producing. Los Angeles-based Chris Fisher, who previously made Nightstalker and Rampage: The Hillside Strangler Murders, will direct. The budget is pegged around $10m.

The story picks up seven years after the first film (and Donnie's death) when little sister Samantha Darko and her best friend Corey are now 18 and on a roadtrip to Los Angeles when they are plagued by bizarre visions.

Fisher said in a statement: "I am a great admirer of Richard Kelly's film and hope to create a similar world of blurred fantasy and reality."

Producers have spoken to Richard Kelly about the project but he is not involved in any official capacity at this stage.

Simon Crowe of Velvet Octopus added: "I think there is a new generation of cinema-goers who will be very excited to see this film."

Crowe quipped to ScreenDaily: "Donnie's not in [the new film] but there are meteorites and rabbits."

The project starts shooting May 18.

I'm not sure how I feel about this at all.
I think we need to leave Donnie Darko alone.

The is a petition to stop the Donnie Darko sequel.
While I love petitions and don't really like sequels (unless they are parts of trilogies) this is not going to do anything. The film already has an International distributor and distribution by Fox in North America. And although Richard Kelly is not associated with this sequel, he did give the rights to the production company to use his characters and storyline.

Maybe it won't be so bad. The production company, Silver Nitrate Films, also produced Spun, which I liked. Let's give it a chance before we judge.

cloverfield = scary

I finally saw Cloverfield last night and while the plot was pretty lame (boy loves girl, boy fucks girl, boy doesn't call girl cuz he's moving to Japan, girl comes to party with another boy, girl leaves party, monster arrives, boy tries to save the girl he let get away.) Oh yeah and I did I say that there is a big scary monster that has parasites that fall from it. Then the parasites eat people's bodies and then the people explode.

I would have liked to have seen more of the monster and the parasites and maybe some more gore. But I think that they did a good job with the suspense and I liked the shooting style. Overall, I was pretty freaked out. I like mass destruction movies. I feel like they are preparing me, just in case something like this were to happen.

If you see this movie, watch the special features because it is amazing how they created this film, basically all with green screens and matchmove.

These people do a good job being scared.

saturday:
i finally left the apt on saturday afternoon at 4. took a lovely stroll down to dupont. sat by the fountain with some coffee, saw some whippets with droopy balls and went shopping.

later that evening, went to vegetate with the ladies (liz, betsy, linds, kirsten, c-line). had some wine that tasted a little bit like beer, avoided the torrential downpour and made it over to bar pilar, where we had a nice window seat and met up with ian. the mammal also met us later. the evening ended at the cat, where we sat on the couch and people watched.

for some reason, as soon as my momentum changes, i am instantly drunk.

sunday:
yummy brunch at rumba with bets, mammal, molly, ian.
spent the rest of the day shooting bucks at pharmacy.
christened mike murphy's first sunday funday shift.
a great classic sunday funday was had by all.
i had to bail at 10, but i believe others stayed out later.

great weekend. friday night, i went to the red derby with betsy and lindsey for drinks. we sat outside in the new patio. it's odd sitting on the sidewalk on 14th and quincy. there isn't much to see except for a laundromat and a funeral home. i found out that red rocks used to be a funeral home. very weird. there were also a lot of people wearing flip flops. i don't really understand the concept of getting dressed up and then deciding to wear flip flops to the bar. it's not summer yet. it's not 100 degrees. if you put on a cute dress, can you at least wear cute sandals and not your reefs?

the patio closes at midnight, so we had to go inside. the crowd at the red derby is starting to feel like wonderland on the weekends. there was a lot of dance music playing. i almost lost my phone. i left it in the bathroom and then 10 minutes later realized i didn't have it. luckily someone heard me talking about it and said he turned it in to the bartender. thank god. i cannot lose my phone.

A rebirth

Upon reading that the Strokes are indeed working on a 4th album, I realized that it's time for a Megaissance.

Spring is here and summer is near. Sunday Fundays are happening. BBQs are planned. Beach trips are soon. Liz Crow and I are planning some festy trips as we did circa 2004. Life, in general, is pretty fucking great and music in general is glorious.

I used to blog, a lot. So I'm back, for realz. At least for the Summer Megaissance.
